Business System Modernization(also
known as IRS Prime) is an ongoing multibillion dollar
project to modernize current IRS process and its
computer systems.The current
IRS network is composed of 40 mainframe computers, 871
midrange computers, more than 100,000 individual
computers, 2,779 vendor supplied software products, and
more than 50 million lines of IRS maintained computer
code. New projects and systems will modernize IRS
business processes and technologies by replacing over
200 disconnected systems with a fully integrated "system
of systems." The Customer Account Data Engine(CADE) will be one of the first
component systems to be built. This engine will replace
the tape-based master file with shared, modern
databases. In an effort to parallel the level of
customer service that rival the private sector and
encourage e-filing, e-services project is initiated. The
e-services will provide several taxpayer services
electronically so the tax preparers can resolve the tax payer
issues, submit power of attornies, order transcript delivery. Turnaround
time for many of these tasks was several days which will
be cut to immediate response to one day as e-Services
goes online. e-services accesses data from current
master files as CADE is being built.
BRTech is designing
the
Transitional
Transaction
Bridge
software between new modernized web based systems and
current master files. This software is used by
transcript delivery system and disclosure authorization
system. It involves data retrieval from current master
files and other non modernized databases, conversion to
XML and performing necessary XSLT processing. |

As the centerpiece of NASA's Mission
To Planet Earth (MTPE), the Earth Observing System (EOS)
heralds an unprecedented era of multi-disciplinary
research to study the processes leading to global
change. A constellation of remote-sensing satellites
scans the Earth for several years sending back hundreds
of gigabytes of valuable data every day. Heavy
processing and data product generation requires archives
to store terabytes of data daily; over the lifetime of
EOS, the archives will store petabytes (1 petabyte= 1,000 terabytes) of data.
The EOS Data Information System (EOSDIS) provides the
computing and network facilities to support the EOS
research activities, including processing, distributing,
and archiving EOS data; exchanging research results
among scientists; and commanding and controlling the
spacecraft instrumentation. EOSDIS's infrastructure, the EOSDIS
Core System (ECS), provides scientists the computing
architecture needed to accomplish these goals. ECS has
been designed to enable evolution to support a broad
range of data partners. ECS provides scientists and
other users a broad range of desk top services from 9
science data centers - known as the Distributed Active
Archive Centers (DAACs).
BRTech had the
opportunity to provide technical leadership for the Data
Management subsystem of ECS which serves as a middleware
layer of ECS to route the data requests to the correct
DAAC using an ECS data dictionary and directory of ECS
data holdings and also perform multi DAAC search if data
is held by multiple DAACs.
Also, BRTech personnel
designed and developed:
- Database
replication prototype for Earth Science Data
Dictionary in 3 different sites where all sites can
act as primary.
- On-demand
data product request Manager client to submit requests and
schedule the productions.
- Attribute
Value Manager client to
select attribute categories, attributes, and their
valid values.
- Price
estimate functionality for Landsat 7 data product requests.
- Subsystem
design documents, database schema specifications.
Also, supported configuration management and system
integration technical support for above components.
- DBMS
performance benchmarks for ECS data model for Sybase,
Oracle, Illustra, UniSQL, and ObjectStore. Performed trade
studies on OODBMS/ORDBMS for use by ECS dataserver.

Alcatel's
1100 Network Management System is a suite of software
products that monitor and manage Alcatel 1100 High Speed Switches
(HSS) in broad band networks.
BRTech was assigned
to the design, development and testing of configuration
management software in support of HSS, which is a data
switch that supports both Frame Relay and Asynchronous
Transfer Mode (ATM) protocols. This software helps
configure HSS switch parameters. |

Inmarsat
Aeronautical Mobile Satellite Services (AMSS) provides
global satellite communications to and from aircraft.
The Inmarsat AMSS global
coverage is presently divided into four Ocean Regions
(ORs), with each OR serviced
by an Inmarsat satellite.
Within each OR, an aircraft (AES) communicates via the
satellite with one of the Ground Earth Stations (GES),
which connects into public or private terrestrial
networks.
BRTech was assigned
to design and develop System Management, and Contingency
Management portions of AMSS so that these management
functions could be centralized. With this in place, AMSS
can: efficiently use satellite resources; service high
priority safety calls in all circumstances;
automatically locate AES so that it can route
terrestrial callers; efficiently use GES equipment and
space as the number of GESs
within an OR increase. |
